College Progress…
As a high school senior, I’m naturally all caught up in the college application process recently - although now I think I’m mainly finished. I applied to:
- Vanderbilt University - Nashville, TN
- Boston University - Boston, MA
- Lawrence University - Appleton, WI
- Oberlin Conservatory - Oberlin, OH
The most frequently asked question I get, after “where are you applying?” is “do you want to be a music major?” I guess technically, the answer is yes - although I don’t think it’s that simple. I want music to take me somewhere. One of my most serious considerations is the study of music and how it affects the brain - a sort of cognitive musicology or musical neuroscience or whatever you want to call it.
I had a couple sources of inspiration: An iTunes U show called Music and the Brain from the Library of Congress. This is really fascinating to listen to, and it’s free, so you might want to give it a shot. The other was a PBS special called The Music Instinct: Science & Song. My dad actually ended up purchasing this after watching half of it on TV, and I’ve watched it several times. It’s an incredibly descriptive and graphic representation of how music affects the brain.
Anyways, I still have to audition at all four of those schools. My auditions are four consecutive weekends in February. Being a resident of New York State, the trips should be just bundles of fun.
