How to sync Mac Address Book contacts with Verizon cell phone

Today I got the enV3. I love the phone, but of course immediately had the problem of importing 150 new contacts from my Mac Address Book (which I had created previously by hand, getting phone numbers off my last phone and typing them in manually).  I ended up doing it using Bluetooth, Automator, and Address Book Smart Groups.

1. Pair your Mac with your Verizon phone on Bluetooth. Make sure they’re both discoverable, and that your phone supports file transfer.  Choose “Always Connect” on your phone when asked.

2. Go to Address Book and create a Smart Group. Your only rule should be “Phone Contains - “.  This is to isolate your Address Book contacts which have phone numbers (assuming this is what you want, although I ran into some difficulties trying to send vCards of people who only had AIM screen names, so this is probably the best way to go).

3. Open Automator. Choose custom work flow. Under Library, select Contacts.

4. Drag in “Get Specified Address Book Items” as your first action. Click Add, click on the Smart Group you just created, then press command+A to select all contacts (note: don’t click Add when selecting the Smart Group or it won’t work - you have to select all the vCards themselves). Click Add.

5. Drag in “Export vCards” as your second action. Choose “individual vCards” then choose your location. (Mine was a folder on the desktop called “vCards”.)

6. Run the workflow.  Make sure that under “Results” it displays vCard icons of all your Smart Group contacts.

7. Open System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Select your phone from the devices on the left. Click the actions drop-down box (the icon looks like a cog) and click Send File.  Go to the folder with your vCards you just exported, then select each individual vCard (again, don’t select the folder - select all the vCards at once).

8. Make sure your phone is Discoverable and click Send.

9. Watch magic happen.

It took my phone about 15 seconds to import 150 or so vCards.  Saved me a heck of a lot of time.  Good luck, feel free to contact or email me with any questions.
